Homeschool Workshop ~ Charlotte Mason/Classical

Kathy Hoeweler, one of the assessors who shared at PEACH’s January meeting, along with Loa Sholder, is offering a workshop on March 1, 2014.  Feel free to pass this information to other homeschool families.  The details:

 INSPIRATION FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY

Learn to infuse the best of Charlotte Mason’s Principles and the Stages of Learning into your learning lifestyle!

Does your homeschool journey need a breath of fresh air?  Learn to let go of your public school paradigm with guidance and inspiration from some of the best and most trusted educational philosophies.  We’ll set the stage by sharing Charlotte Mason’s principles as well as look at the classical approach to the 3 stages of learning and will touch on who God created your child to be.  The workshop will then be devoted to sharing these methods in a “learn by doing” lifestyle as we look at what and how to teach various subjects.  These will include reading (spelling, dictation and copywork, too), nature, art and history.  We’ll talk about habit and how to “schedule” what you have learned.  There will also be time for Q and A.

When:  March 1, 2014.  Setting is limited to 40 attendees.  Pre-registration is a must.  The conference will be from 9-12:30.  Sign in and pick up materials at 8:30.  We will start promptly at 9 AM.  Please plan to be seated before then.

Where:  LJB, Inc. 2500 Newmark Drive, Miamisburg, OH 45342.  LJB is conveniently located between Lyons Road and SR 741 in Miamisburg behind the Dayton Mall.  Look for the red circle with the initials “L J B” in white.  There is plenty of free parking.

Who:  Kathy Hoeweler is a certified teacher who had to totally change her educational paradigm when she began to homeschool 20+ years ago.  Charlotte Mason was the spark that ignited a journey of learning as a lifestyle.  Kathy is married to Tim.  They will celebrate their 30th anniversary March 31st.  They have 4 children, 2 of whom are homeschool graduates.  Their journey has also included adopting and homeschooling children with special needs.  Kathy values the time she spends with Moms (and sometimes, Dads, too) completing narrative assessments.  Folks appreciate her out of the box thinking.

Loa Sholder has three teenagers and is looking forward to her oldest child graduating from learning at home this spring.  It hasn’t always been a smooth journey, her oldest child didn’t learn to read until 4th grade and her daughter was also diagnosed with double-deficit dyslexia a few years later.  Today she is a reading tutor with specialized training in remediating dyslexia and has helped teach numerous children how to unlock the world of print.  Loa and her husband, Kevin, live in WashingtonTownship.

Cost:  $20 includes the workshop, snacks, materials and door prizes.  Checks must be received by Saturday, February 22nd.  A confirmation e-mail will be sent.

Please make checks payable to:

Common Core and the Impact on Homeschooling

PEACH is excited to host an informative discussion focusing on the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) and its impact on Homeschooling.   Melanie Elsey, legislative liaison for Christian Home Educators of Ohio (CHEO), will be our featured speaker.

Melanie Elsey has a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a Bachelor of Science degree in special education. After serving as a learning disabilities teacher in Ohio’s public school system, she stepped out the classroom to fulltime responsibilities at home. She and her husband, John, home educated their three children (K-12) and are now enjoying grandparenthood. Melanie has served as CHEO’s legislative liaison since 1994. In this capacity she provides analysis of pending legislation and potential changes in policy that would have an impact on home educating families.
